UpFront Software, with its fully integrated POS app solutions, solves this and more for small to midsized, independent grocery stores. Its integrated approach removes the complexity of managing in-store transactions.
By empowering small grocery merchants to provide the grocery-related transaction capabilities found in larger stores, UpFront eliminates the need to invest significantly in upgrading their payment processing infrastructure. Among the POS systems available to grocers, it offers managed price updates, promotional pricing, and mixed packs through integration with the wholesalers’ systems.
“We develop our POS products to deliver powerful capabilities that ensure clients don’t require additional pieces of equipment,” says Andy Beaudet, CEO of UpFront.
Prime among UpFront’s distinguishing features is its ability to process grocery-related government welfare program payments through standard POS systems.
History of Health Insurance Benefits for Grocery
Health insurance supplemental benefits card programs have come a long way since their inception in the mid-2000s. Initially designed to differentiate health plans, they have now evolved to offer a wide range of benefits, including over-the-counter (OTC) products and, most recently, groceries.

With the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services allowing the use of health plan funds for food in 2020, there has been an approximate 900 percent increase in the number of health plans offering grocery benefits between 2020 and 2023. This trend is expected to continue as food security becomes a significant concern in the United States, particularly for senior citizens and minority groups who are at a higher risk of food insecurity.
The expansion of grocery benefits via health insurance supplemental benefits cards is increasing on multiple fronts, with ongoing increases in the number of dollars allocated by the health plans. This presents a unique opportunity for retailers to attract health plan customers with money to spend. Participation in these programs is a path to an increased customer base and overall sales. In 2024, an expansion of OTC benefits in Medicaid can be expected, further increasing the reach of health insurance supplemental benefit offerings.
Upfront is at the vanguard of this trend, ever ready to enable retailers to tap into the growing health card and OTC Medicaid benefits programs in the grocery segment.
Easing Access to Grocery-Related Welfare Payments
In the U.S., many state and federal government welfare benefits are grocery-related, with customers using specific checkout terminals. Unlike most large stores, smaller grocery stores with limited space and resources struggle to designate special lanes for these extra terminals.
Courtesy of UpFront, space, resource and cost limitations are no longer issues for independent grocers. Its integrated POS software, which eliminates the need to acquire, install, and maintain additional equipment, supports integrated payments for government welfare benefits programs like SNAP and eWIC. UpFront is also certified to process all major health insurance grocery benefit plans and accepts all major credit card processors.
Once deployed in client POS systems, it offers integration and processing solutions for a variety of transaction methods, including credit, debit, gift cards, and fuel cards. This enables customers to access grocery benefits with ease.
An integral part of POS systems is the PIN pad, an electronic device used in card-based transactions. UpFront’s collaborations with PIN pad companies eradicate complexities associated with obtaining the relevant certifications for processing different cards on each device, optimizing the integration process and enhancing the overall transaction experience.
A notable example is its partnership with the French merchant services technology company Ingenico. It worked with the company’s engineers to create products that allowed grocers in Pennsylvania to read specific types of cards using Ingenico devices. It created an interface in the software that resides directly on the PIN pad device, guaranteeing secure and seamless transactions while eliminating the need for equipment upgrades. The integrated solution also removes the need to install the correct drivers or perform software updates. There is no 3rd party software driver that need to be installed.

UpFront offers its integrated POS services through partnerships with fintech firms and payment processors. Noteworthy among them are the renowned fintech company Fidelity National Information Services and the payment processing solution provider Worldpay. This enables it to provide seamless integration and process solutions for various types of transactions. Highly focused on security compliance, it also conducts self-audits and closely collaborates with the Payment Card Industry Council to ensure adherence to industry standards.
Serving the Dynamic POS Space
The ability to deliver innovative solutions that cater to market demands is key for UpFront. For instance, it developed POS interfaces with various e-commerce companies recognizing their increasing popularity and importance during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Another instance of UpFront’s drive to actively adapt to changing industry trends is its response to large grocery chains increasingly migrating to binary based platforms to manage their transaction processing operations. It obtained binary certification to offer the same high-quality, fast, and secure transactions to smaller grocery businesses. This eliminates the need for independent grocers to acquire certifications for each platform, as they gain the transaction processing horsepower available to larger, multi-lane stores at a fraction of the cost.
We are one of the few companies to have done a full integration to support the chip-enabled state welfare and health insurance cards for use in grocery stores
UpFront is always a step ahead in adopting emerging technology that simplifies in-store transactions. It extends its capabilities to include health insurance cards that allow users to purchase over-the-counter grocery items in pharmacies. It is one of the few companies in the U.S. certified and supporting transactions on every health insurance card presented at the register.
Its technological expertise mitigates the interface integration challenges associated with evolving payment technologies used in health insurance cards, like the transition from magnetic stripes to EMV chip-enabled smart cards. It successfully took on the challenge of reading the chips on the smart cards independent of third-party assistance, adding to its long list of capabilities.
“We are one of the few companies to have done a full integration to support the chip-enabled state welfare and health insurance cards for use in grocery stores,” says Beaudet.
Leveraging these competencies, UpFront has gained a foothold across smart card-operative states like Pennsylvania, Oklahoma, Texas, and Louisiana. Certified for processing health insurance cards in every U.S. state, it is especially active in Pennsylvania, helping local grocers process health insurance cards as well as SNAP and eWIC benefits through one piece of POS equipment.
Multicurrency Grocery Store Transactions Made Easy
UpFront’s capabilities go beyond the U.S. borders. Its software possesses the capability to integrate multiple currencies in grocery store transactions. It works with a grocery reseller that has implemented its software in numerous stores across Maine, including those located near the Canadian border. This geographical proximity to Canada leads these stores to receive customers who prefer paying in Canadian dollars.
In response, UpFront created a system capable of handling foreign currency conversions and exchange rates in its software. This enables the reseller to serve customers better in their stores in the border regions.
In another instance, it collaborated with a grocery distributor in Miami, Florida, which served a lot of customers paying in different currencies. Together, they undertook a project to support multiple currencies in the POS software, including Jamaican and Canadian dollars. They also engaged with offshore central banks to facilitate the adoption of central bank digital currencies in their digital interface solution, to facilitate transactions in foreign currencies.
Ready to support most any Federal or State Financial initiative that is planned for the near future.
Initially focused on full integrations for midsized stores, its integrated POS software’s burgeoning features have made UpFront a prime candidate for attracting significant interest from larger stores, reflection its ability to meet the evolving needs of as broader market while prepared to support Federal and State Financial initiatives planned for the near future.
A Commitment to Advancing Innovation
A powerhouse of technological and domain expertise, UpFront’s internal engineering prowess and commitment to innovation remove the need for outsourcing and contribute significantly to its competitive position in the market. Its in house team of skilled financial technology engineers manages its solutions, maintaining complete control over the product and has the ability to rapidly implement emergency patches or updates.

The team works closely with a client’s engineering teams to update and implement its software in single- and multi-lane grocery stores, within a day. This fast and flexible approach is especially advantageous in the grocery segment, where larger chains frequently acquire smaller stores. During such events, UpFront’s engineers work with the engineering teams at the acquiring companies to set up integrated interfaces and payment processing solutions in the POS systems of the acquired stores in a rapid and streamlined manner.
“Jose Hilario, UpFront’s ‘hands-on’ CTO and long term partner has developed and successfully achieved many product certifications for UpFront on some of the country’s leading processing platforms such as Fidelity Information Systems. Mr. Hilario has been involved with every aspect of what it takes to produce Financial Technology products and manages a team of other developers who are heading up the mobile products division.”
