Why Should Retailers Improve Digital Payment Capabilities?
Retail Tech Insights | Monday, January 27, 2020
Mobile payments can offer more opportunities for retailers that they would have never dreamt of.
FREMONT, CA: A recent study conducted by a popular payment solutions provider has revealed that three out of five U.S. smartphone users where only half of the retailers accepted mobile payments. These smartphone users prefer to pay for the products they buy in-store through their devices by using loyalty points earned while showing their interest in joining a loyalty program as a suitable way to use the points earned to purchase products. More than half of the shoppers loved adding cash to an app or digital wallet while being in-store. Shoppers, nowadays, do not prefer to carry payment methods, like cash or credit cards, for their disadvantages as these payment methods are less likely to be lost or stolen. Retailers should improve mobile payment capabilities in-store to attract more customers.
While making payments, a customer simply presents the mobile device, authenticates the transaction, and is on their way. This will create a quicker, more user-friendly experience for consumers and helps businesses expedite transactions. This reduces the need to search for cash or wait for a chip card transaction.

Enhancing digital payment capabilities can create a more seamless checkout process while boosting loyalty. Mobile payment offers extra layers of security with authentication, such as fingerprint scans or facial recognition. It is expected that increasing mobile wallet adoption can create about $190 billion in transactional value in the U.S. by 2021. Also, nearly 2.1 billion customers across the world use mobile wallets for payments or money transfers. However, with the lack of updated hardware, retailers are failing to adopt the technology, especially grocers, who are the last to take the retail technology trends.
With retailers adding mobile payment options to their apps, adoption is of utmost importance. Shoppers are willing to use a digital wallet than downloading dedicated store payment apps. Thus retailers should focus on putting payment methods in the palm of consumers’ hands to make the process easier and convenient than ever before. Furthermore, consumers can keep track of their spending at any time.
