The retailers are using drones to increase visibility in the warehouse and track the supply chain.
FREMONT, CA: Today, almost all the drones utilized in retail are augmentation robots, operated on a mobile device by their operators. Usually, retailers use drones in two ways. To maximize yard and warehouse activities, retailers utilize drones for inventory management on the supply chain aspect. To access inventory data quicker and more reliably than the human eye, drones can search across aisles.
In order to help warehouse employees gain visibility and better control over yard equipment, drones can maintain track of the location of containers outside the yard. It will help optimize logistics such as dock scheduling while reducing loading or unloading times for shipments.
Outside warehouses, retailers are starting to engage in last-mile deliveries of autonomous drone technology, typically an expensive retail supply chain aspect. Some businesses are beginning to outsource their last-mile services to third-party carriers rather than using conventional carriers such as FedEx, UPS, or USPS to drive down costs and respond to consumer demand for almost immediate deliveries.
Drone technology, combined with mobile apps, offers traceability and facilitates improved scheduling, resulting in fewer unreliable deliveries and delays that adversely affect the overall shopping experience. Therefore, more retailers are updating their transport management systems to assist in the last mile's successful execution.
ENABLING CONTACTLESS RETAIL EXPERIENCES
Although drone technology is still new, deliveries in the future will become more mainstream. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has urged retailers to respond more rapidly to consumers' evolving needs and has put an increased emphasis on the importance of contactless delivery. It opens a massive potential for drone technology for retailers to use.
A successful drone network can be built by big-box retailers with the capacity and budget to develop, maintain, and operate a fleet of autonomous drones, whereas smaller retailers can rely on a third-party drone provider. With either route, retailers may incorporate drones into supply chain activities while managing customers' health and safety concerns.
