The Prospect of Retail Payments in 2022
Retail Tech Insights | Wednesday, April 28, 2021
To make 2022 the most successful year yet, retailers must invest in the right technology to enable the introduction of digital payment choices, the service of omnichannel shoppers, and compliance with growing security needs.
FREMONT, CA: The payments sector saw a flurry of innovations and developments last year. Indeed, in 2021, more than four out of five Americans will have used some digital payment. COVID-19 expedited this trend in digital adoption, but with the pandemic's impact continuing to shape how customers shop and pay, merchants must also continue to adopt new payment methods in 2022. The new year gives merchants new chances to prioritize strategic and creative payment processes to differentiate themselves from the competition and better serve their customers.
Investigate alternate digital payment methods: Consumers expect a quick and convenient checkout experience. As a result, the use of QR codes, contactless payments, and digital currency payments has continued to grow.

In the United States, recent waves of card re-issuance by central banks contributed significantly to this acceptance by seeding the market with new contactless capabilities. In the United States, there are already over 190 million contactless Visa credit cards in circulation. Additionally, there has been a surge in demand for increased acceptance of digital currencies. Indeed, 57 percent of consumers would make a purchasing decision based on whether a merchant offers a good choice of digital payment options.
When alternative payment methods are connected to existing payment ecosystems, businesses gain additional benefits, including the opportunity to seamlessly connect loyalty programs and provide a simplified and frictionless consumer experience. Creating this foundation is crucial for future-proofing payment procedures to satisfy consumer expectations.
Provide smooth and rapid omnichannel payment capabilities: As customer expectations shift, businesses require visibility into their customers' purchasing behaviors throughout the digital and physical worlds. For example, over the last few years, buy online, pick up in-store (BOPIS), and curbside services have grown in popularity, with approximately three-quarters of consumers using them. Additionally, many buyers want to continue using BOPIS and curbside services until the pandemic is over. To ensure the successful execution of these services, businesses must have a diverse set of omnichannel capabilities that provide a fast and seamless checkout experience across all channels.
Additionally, it is critical to facilitate purchases and returns. When a consumer is requested at checkout to preserve their card information by creating an account, they gain access to a gateway that stores their card information for future purchases — even those conducted online or through a mobile app.
Now, the process is even faster the next time they check out. Businesses can simply recollect payment details throughout pickup and return processes on the back end. All the consumer needs to do is present proof of purchase, and the store assistant will handle the pickup or return flawlessly.
