Here are some of the recent changes and how they impacted the retail sector in 2022
FREMONT, CA: The market volatility generated by Russia's invasion of Ukraine hasn't scared away European retail investors which indicate large bets on Gazprom and other equities that have moved the most in response to the situation. While Moscow's stock exchange remains closed, trading has continued in London and across Europe, notably on retail-focused platforms such as Lang & Schwarz (L&S) and Tradegate in Germany, as well as eToro.
Even though its share price has fallen about 80 percent in the last eight sessions, depository receipts in Russian gas giant Gazprom were among the most actively traded on L&S and Tradegate. The top trade was Rheinmetall, a defense company that rocketed on the likelihood of a significant increase in military spending in Germany, Europe's largest economy. Its stock has risen 50 percent in the last four sessions but is still down 10 percent higher since Monday.

Hensoldt, a security electronics company, was another favorite among individual investors, as were renewable-energy companies, which are expected to benefit from a global drive to lessen dependency on Russian gas. Retail investors have been net purchasers during this year's heightened volatility, according to social trading company eToro, and this attitude did not change dramatically last week when Russia attacked Ukraine.
This is in line with their global investor survey, which identified that retail investors are well-diversified, confident in their investment plans, and are unwilling to change despite increasing risks. On eToro, average open positions in Gazprom shares increased by 2,201 percent from Thursday to Monday compared to the previous year, despite the brokerage warning of intermittent trading and market disruptions on Russian stocks and other assets. Similarly, new positions in Rheinmetall (RDXG.DE) and wind turbine manufacturers Nordex (NDXG.DE) and Vestas Wind (VWS.CO) soared 3,519 percent and 108 percent, respectively, over the same time period.
