Data category
PIM organizes and centralizes all product-related data in one location. SKUs, product descriptions, pictures, and other features are examples of this. The data is regularly updated for accuracy and classified into several categories for easier dissemination across channels. While PIM solely maintains product data information, ETL does not have this restriction. In an enterprise, the ETL process works with a variety of forms of data. It takes structured and unstructured data from numerous sources and changes it according to business criteria before storing it in a central data repository for subsequent analysis.
Process vs. platform
Data loading, transfer, aggregation, and integration processes are necessary for data consolidation and delivery in PIM. As a result, we may conclude that PIM activities necessitate ETL procedures. Extensive ETL operations are required to exchange product information with marketing, sales, merchandising, product management, and other eCommerce organizations. Getting data into PIM and sending it out in the desired format to the appropriate distribution channels is critical. While PIM and ETL operate on the fundamental premise of centralizing, enriching, and providing data to various channels, the latter serves as a subset process inside PIM. The ETL procedure is used in PIM platforms, although it is not confined to them. It is a data integration technology utilized in many parts of data warehousing for meaningful business analytics and insights.
