From facial recognition and biometrics to in-car payment systems, businesses in the retail industry are finding ways to make customers enjoy their purchases without a safety concern. Retailers around the country have been experimenting and analyzing contactless payment methods majorly in two forms. One being contactless credit cards and the other being with the use of mobile wallets.
Tap-and-go card payment is the recent favorite mode of payment for grocery stores and pharmacies. With COVID-19 contributing a lot to this trend, customers find this method more convenient than the traditional methods. Interestingly, financial services giant Visa is now investing in this mode of payment by introducing a 'tap-to-phone' feature in android phones. Apart from existing online payment methods using mobile wallets (for example, Google Pay), Facial ID and biometrics are the next trends in contactless payment methods.
There are few restaurants that have experimented with this mode by partnering with fintech startups to set up kiosks that enable facial ID technology. This is a whole lot more comfortable for customers. The third option in this category that is gaining popularity is in-car payments using voice assistants. Even though for now, this technology is limited to refueling and electric vehicle recharging, there are promising development possibilities to this mode of payment.
By adopting a people-oriented payment trend, businesses can gain and sustain the trust of their customers. Contactless payment options come with certain advantages like quick transactions, safety, and security from physical contact, and protection from fraud and malicious activities, which will further inculcate trust among consumers and ensure their popularity. Hence, there is no doubt that contactless payments will keep on expanding their footprint across the retail sector.
