Can Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) Transform The Payment Industry?
Retail Tech Insights | Thursday, March 23, 2023
Buy now pay later (BNPL) is a payment option that has gained traction in Europe over the past few years. BNPL enables customers to purchase items online or in-store and spread the purchase cost over time. This payment arrangement does not typically involve any fees or interest charges for the consumer as long as the borrowed amount is repaid within the agreed time frame. In essence, it is an interest-free financing option for consumers.
According to a recent report published by Deloitte, by 2025, approximately 11 per cent of e-Commerce purchases in the European region are expected to be completed through BNPL services. Recording strong growth due to the flexibility of payment options, BNPL has been touted as the primary mode of payment for individuals and businesses.

BNPL services are expanding rapidly, with new providers entering the market and existing providers expanding their offerings. Some of the key players include Affirm, Klarna, Afterpay, and Clearpay. Klarna, one of the largest BNPL providers in Europe, has expanded its offerings beyond retail purchases to include travel, medical and other services. In addition, major credit card companies and payment processors are acquiring or partnering with BNPL providers to offer their services. With decreased cash payments, such companies are capitalizing by partnering with retailers and e-commerce platforms to offer BNPL as a checkout option.
One of the key drivers of the BNPL market in Europe is the growing demand for alternative payment options among consumers, particularly among younger generations. According to a survey by finder.com, more than 17 million customers in the UK have used BNPL services. In addition, the COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the shift to online shopping, further boosting the adoption of BNPL.
In terms of regulation, BNPL is facing increased scrutiny in Europe. A proposed revision to the Consumer Credit Directive will eliminate the exemption for interest-free loans from the framework of consumer credit regulations. This implies that many BNPL products, which were not previously subject to regulations aimed at safeguarding consumers from excessive indebtedness, will require substantial restructuring to comply with the new requirements when implemented in 2024.
Despite these regulatory challenges, BNPL services offer interest-free periods and flexible repayment options, making them an attractive alternative to traditional credit cards. In addition, BNPL can also help boost retail sales by making it easier for consumers to make purchases.
Looking to the future, the BNPL market in Europe is expected to continue to grow and evolve. One trend that is likely to emerge is the integration of BNPL services with personal finance apps, providing users with more visibility and control over their spending. In addition, BNPL providers may also expand their offerings beyond just retail purchases to include things like healthcare expenses and utility bills.
However, as the BNPL market grows, it will likely face increasing regulatory scrutiny, particularly around consumer protection issues. BNPL providers must ensure that they comply with local regulations and provide clear information on fees and interest rates to their customers. BNPL providers must adapt to changing consumer preferences and regulatory requirements as the market evolves to ensure long-term success.
