y, and data-driven offers are positioned to provide value-added propositions. Retailers and merchants are incorporating payments into their value chains, while technology titans are stepping up their financial services game by integrating payments into their offerings.
The following are some trends to dominate the global retail payments market in 2022 and beyond:
Real-time payments (RTP): Consumers worldwide are increasingly accepting this payment method due to the rapid availability of funds, simplicity, ease of use, transparency, and safety. RTP delivers real-time alerts and provides features such as invoices with payments, payment requests, and account statements.
RTP's value proposition is enhanced by incorporating current features such as support for all utility bill payments, in-app shopping, and peer-to-peer payments. Financial institutions are investigating additional use cases to pave the path for innovative and smooth payment options for consumers and enterprises. Fifty-four countries have adopted RTP systems, and several others are developing them.
A digital transformation is taking place with innovations
and interoperability for cross-border transactions in existing systems.
Digital currencies: In the evolution of digital payments, digital
currencies represent the next step. Expressed, a digital currency regulated by a central bank would function similarly to cash that can be stored and accessed online. Digital currencies would expedite financial inclusion and address deficiencies in the current payment system.
Buy-now-pay-later (BNPL): Globally, the BNPL payment option has spread rapidly, often known as a short-term loan product with no fees and interest. Due to its ability to offer installment goods to consumers neglected by traditional financial institutions, its global acceptance by merchants is growing. Consumers are increasingly turning to it because of its straightforward pricing patterns, convenience, and user-friendliness (there is no requirement for credit history or other proof).
The BNPL option provides access to credit in a decentralized, democratic, and inclusive manner, thereby expanding a market previously dominated by multinational credit card network providers and conventional financial institutions. This emerging fintech vertical experienced multibillion-dollar acquisitions worldwide as fintechs and traditional financial institutions invested significant capital in enhancing their footing; for example, Square purchased Afterpay for USD29 billion, and PayPal acquired Paidy for USD2.7 billion. Companies have collaborated (e.g., Klarna-Stripe and Amazon-Affirm) to take advantage of each other's knowledge and geographic reach; this would facilitate cross-pollination and accelerate corporate growth.
In this era of digitalization, client preferences are rapidly changing, and technology is becoming obsolete at an unprecedented rate. Companies must now develop and invest in new payment systems to remain competitive and increase their share of the volume and value of client payments. Governments and payment bodies/regulators are constructing the regulatory frameworks required to oversee the development of payment technology, combat fraud, and protect user interests.
