3D Printing Tech is Disrupting the Footwear Industry

3D printing is one of those technologies that can disrupt the manufacturing industry, especially in retail. The technology is offering plenty of options and promises a process that is waste-free and environmentally sustainable
Fremont, CA: The latest innovation in 3D printing is to deliver a new and renewed type of shoe. Canadian footwear brand Native Shoes in a partnership with Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)'s Self Assembly Lab, has designed and developed a technology that prints a full set of shoes from liquid rubber, according to the 3D Printing Media Network.
The technology is said to print the liquid rubber into a vat of gelatinous liquid, allowing the brand to produce a shoe in a single piece. The shoes printed by this process resemble the patent leather. They are meant to be a part of Native Shoes' commitment to making light, no-frills, and more environmentally sustainable footwear. The shoes are made to order, helping save resources in a process that is waste-free with the liquid rubber used mostly from recycled materials.

Hobbyists mainly drove the development of 3D printing up until now. Retail-oriented use cases have just started to appear in the market as the technology has improved; however, 3D printing offers the potential to radically disrupt supply chains if the technology is made to operable at any scale.
Footwear, in particular, has been a highlight for tech innovations that have brought together customization and automation that include pilots built in the field of 3D printing. In 2018, Nike also initiated the use of its 3D printing technology - Flyprint - to design and produce a synthetic upper portion for various shoes, as reported by Techcrunch. Shoes that were made with the technology are available only in limited quantities to some of the elite runners.
In the Apparel sector, very few retailers have utilized the tech to test out the concept of print-on-demand clothing. In 2017, the Boston-based Ministry of Supply first installed a 3D knitting machine near the checkout counter. The device was capable of printing a customized blazer in 90 minutes.
A survey in the same year has revealed that 95 percent of customers are eager to purchase a product that is 3D printed, and 80 percent have reported the wish to spend more money at a retail shop that would allow them to custom design the product using a 3D printer.
