Retail Industry: Intricacies and Trends

Serge Vasin
In a recent interview Serge Vasin, Co-founder and Partner at Flintera, explores the recent trends and intricacies of the current retail industry
1. What are some of the major challenges and trends that have been impacting the Retail Industry lately?
Inflation has been a major challenge for retailers, especially those in the Baltic states (see the chart below), where the rates are extremely high. And these rates have impacted the purchasing power of customers globally, leading to a decrease in demand for products. This has forced retailers to rethink their pricing strategies and come up with other ways to attract budget-conscious consumers. We’re seeing increased interest in loyalty and other incentive programs because of this.
Additionally, with the continued rise of e-commerce, brick-and-mortar stores have been seeing a decline in foot traffic. High inflation and the resulting economic slowdown have only added to the pain. However, despite these factors, real estate leases and rents remain at an all-time high in many major cities. And as a result, we’re seeing a lot of retail locations close shop, which is a big challenge that must be addressed.
Even the big retailers are being impacted. Take San Francisco’s Union District for example. Roughly 17 retailers have vacated the area since 2020.
Marketing budgets are also being slashed, making it harder for retailers to promote their products and reach consumers. This has led to a greater focus on social media marketing, email marketing, and other forms of targeted advertising. However, even with these strategies in place, it can be difficult to stand out in a crowded market. Retailers are now looking for innovative ways to engage their customers and build loyalty.
The phasing out of 3rd party cookies is also a growing concern for the marketing industry. As cookies are a crucial tool for tracking customer behavior and interests, their absence can lead to a loss of valuable data. Retailers are faced with the challenge of finding alternative ways to gather this data and create targeted marketing campaigns.
Finally, retailers are finding it more difficult to manage multiple SaaS products for emails, SMS, loyalty, recommendation, etc. This is because it can be expensive, and it can also lead to inefficiencies. As a result, many retailers are turning to all-in-one solutions that can provide better pricing and improved performance.
2. What keeps you up at night when it comes to some of the major predicaments in the Retail Industry?
When thinking about technology solutions for the retail industry, the biggest issues I see are as follows:
• Cybersecurity Threats
With the increase of digitalization comes the increased risk of cyber-attacks. The retail industry has become a prime target for cybercriminals because of the vast amount of data that retailers have. Breaches can lead to significant financial damage, loss of customer trust, and reputation damage. Retailers must stay on top of the latest cybersecurity trends to prevent fraud, stay compliant with regulations, and protect their businesses.
• Data Privacy
Data breaches are not only a security issue but can also pose data privacy risks. Laws and regulations around the world are being updated and revised, and retailers must navigate those changes to remain compliant. Consumers' rights have been strengthened, and retailers must be proactive and transparent about data privacy to build and retain trust with customers.
“The team and I are quite bullish on the LATAM market, and we aim to expand there, both organically and through M&A for our portfolio companies.”
• Omni-Channel Integration
The lines between online and offline retail channels have become blurred, and customers expect a seamless shopping experience across all touchpoints. To achieve this, retailers must integrate their online and offline channels. However, the process of integrating channels is complex, costly, and time-consuming. Retailers must also ensure that their in-house technology infrastructure can support the demands of an omnichannel environment.
• Obsolescence
The pace of technology advancements is incredibly rapid, and retailers must adapt to new technologies to remain competitive. However, the time and resources required to keep up with technology can be overwhelming. Retailers who don't keep up with the latest technology trends risk becoming obsolete and losing their market share.
• Customer Experience
In the retail industry, customer experience is everything. Technology is an essential tool for delivering an exceptional customer experience. Understanding and predicting customer needs, preferences, and behavior will be a decisive factor in the future of retail. Retailers must use technology to personalize the shopping experience while maintaining data privacy, securely managing customers’ sensitive information, and maintaining trust at all times.
3. Can you tell us about the latest project that you have been working on and what are some of the technological and process elements that you leveraged to make the project successful?
Recently, we married a loyalty solution from one company with a website personalization solution from another through an M&A deal. We are seeing some amazing results for both companies and their clients. Here’s a bit more on how we did it.
We began our project by identifying the unique needs of each of the companies we were working with. One company had a fantastic loyalty solution to offer, while the other had an incredible website personalization solution. We saw the opportunity to combine the two to provide a unique offering that would set both companies apart from their competitors. We first had to merge the two solutions seamlessly to create an overall experience that would delight customers. This process required us to collaborate closely with both companies to ensure that each solution would work together without any complications. One of the most challenging aspects of the project was to integrate the two various solutions and guarantee that all client data was safely secure.
We are also working on another project that contributes directly to the bottom line of e-commerce operators. This upcoming project is still hush-hush, but what we can reveal is we are using various technologies, including artificial intelligence and machine learning, to make this initiative successful. As with our previous project, we are continuously testing and iterating, implementing user experience at the forefront of our minds. The results achieved thus far are promising, and we hope to reveal later in the year.
Lastly, the team and I are quite bullish on the LATAM market, and we aim to expand there, both organically and through M&A for our portfolio companies. South Americans are notorious for their love for loyalty programs, and the LATAM market has some of the most active and engaged consumer bases globally. We want to tap into this market and provide our award-winning loyalty program solutions to companies in LATAM, streamlining their operations and improving their bottom line.
4. What are some of the technological trends which excite you for the future of the Retail Industry?
One of the technological trends that excite me for the future of the retail industry is the emergence of turnkey solutions. Turnkey solutions offer end-users efficiency by streamlining all the data in one place. This means that retailers can get a comprehensive view of their business operations, from supply chains to inventory management systems, in one platform. Another advantage is that turnkey solutions are based on 1st party data, which is more reliable and accurate. Furthermore, from an investors' perspective, these products have better stickiness, hence higher net dollar retention. This means that businesses that adopt these solutions tend to have more engaged customers who stick around for longer, leading to better growth metrics.
Another trend, which I initially met with skepticism but now appreciate, is the use of Generative AI and large language models (LLMs). This technology seems to be taking the retail industry by storm in the way that they provide retailers with an opportunity to offer a much more personalized experience for their customers. Retailers can use these technologies to build comprehensive and dynamic customer profiles, which they can use to deliver personalized recommendations and offers. When combined with other emerging technologies like blockchain, these deep profiles can also help retailers create customized shopping experiences.
However, the future of these technologies can be somewhat daunting. Imagine a world where intelligent bots are making most of the purchases. That's where the future seems to be headed, and it potentially disrupts traditional retail operations in a significant way. Customers' personal assistants from some vendors are already placing basic orders for customers, but future releases promise to handle most of the purchase workflow.
